Bonar Bridge 0 V Thurso 10 - report from Iain Grant
The Vikings completed a pain-free, back-to-back double over their Sutherland opponents on Saturday.
Striker Mark Nichol bagged five as Bonar caved in after the interval in the match which was shifted to Balintore after doubts over the fitness of Migdale Park.
After their 6-1 win at the Dammies the previous week, fears of a backlash proved unfounded as Thurso took the opportunity to beef up their goal difference.
Martin Sinclair returned to the side after a prolonged stint on the sidelines while former manager Ross Sutherland made his season’s debut from the bench.
With Michael Gray unavailable, Asa Sinclair deputised in goal though he was not over-exerted.
The visitors went in front after eight minutes when Nichol converted from the spot after he himself was pulled down in the box.
Bonar had a decent 10 minute spell before they were floored by two goals in quick succession.
Both came from Martin Sutherland, a tap-in and a smart back-post volley opening his account for the season.
The home defence did not concede again before the break but endured a horror 10 minutes soon after the turnaround.
Nichol latched on to Lee MacDougall’s feed to run in and steer the ball into the far side of the net.
Nichol then got his hat-trick before Jamie Mackenzie finished off a flowing move.
MacKenzie got the goal of the match when he wended his way from the halfway line past a clutch of opponents before netting.
Nichol was denied a stonewall penalty before going on to net twice more, in between a strike from Michael Petrie.
Vikings manager Stevie Reid was happy with how his men went about their business.
He said: “I thought it might have been a sticky one, playing them so quickly after the last game.
“We had a few changes and it perhaps took about 25 minutes for us to gel but I thought our overall performance was excellent.
“We seem to be pulling together well as a unit and we now just need to keep that going.”
Thurso – A. Sinclair, Stewart, S. Sinclair (Bremner 70), Steven, MacDougall, Petrie, Sutherland (Robertson 65), MacGregor, Nichol, MacKenzie, M. Sinclair (Sutherland 65).
Ref – Mr B. Gunn.
