Bonar Bridge 3 V Thurso 10 - report by Iain Grant
The Vikings kept their MSIS North Caley season alive with this runaway win at Brora’s Dudgeon Park on Wednesday evening. Because of the late fixture congestion, the game counted as both the second round of the Football Times Cup and a league fixture.
Bonar benefited in the first half from playing with a raging wind blowing down the slope.
They shocked Thurso by twice taking the lead. Colin Burry put them in front with a back-post header from a free-kick.
Mark Caldwell then counted direct from a free-kick after Thurso had levelled through Phil Makhouli after he was played in by Martin Bain.
Midway through the half, Alan Murray got the final touch after a cracking move sparked by Kevin Miller and sustained by Phil Makhouli and Jamie MacKenzie.
Bonar struck the woodwork twice before going behind four minutes from the break with a late strike from Phil Makhouli after good work by Murray.
Bonar were over-run in the second half with their over-worked keeper Jodie Campbell regularly exposed as Thurso turned the screw.
Murray went on to complete the ‘perfect’ hat-trick with a headed finish adding to his earlier right and left-foot finishes.
Jamie MacKenzie also helped himself to three while a penalty provided Bain with his first goal of the season.
The pick of the night came from Gavin Bremner who netted with a howitzer from just the outside the box.
Bonar grabbed a third late on with Caldwell rifling a second free-kick past Brian Mackay.
Stand-in Thurso boss Ross Sutherland was delighted with the display and how his side recovered from aslow start to dominate the game.
Thurso have no game tomorrow.
Thurso – Mackay, MacLeod, Coghill, Miller, Mackay Steven (M. Makhouli h/t), Bremner, Green, MacKenzie, Bain, P. Makhouli, Murray. Sub (unused) – Sutherland.
