Thurso 2 V Wick Academy 2 - Friendly - 24.7.10 « Result #2 on Jul 25, 2010, 7:21am »
Thurso and Wick Academy shared the spoils at Thurso’s Sir Georges Park in Saturday’s first fully-fledged friendly between the sides.
The match, a testimonial for long-serving Viking Lee MacDougall, proved a good work-out for both sides as they prepare for their respective league campaigns.
Academy looked sharper in the early stages though the first close thing came in their goalmouth when James Murray twice had efforts cleared off the line from Kyle Ross’s corner.
The hosts went in front when a surging run by Jamie MacKenzie ended with his cross being turned past keeper Alan Bokas from eight yards by Mark Nichol.
David Cowie and Sam Mackay both went close before the Highland League side equalised on 25 minutes.
David Allan was chopped down by Michael Gray after he got to a through-ball into the box fractionally before the Thurso keeper.
The friendly status of the game ensured Gray stayed on the park though he was powerless to prevent Mackay blasting home the spot-kick.
Ross Allan made an immediate impression after coming off the bench as he ran through to clip the ball wide of Gray to put his side 2-1 15 minutes from half-time.
A spate of changes made for a messy start to the second half when Gary Weir shot wide from prime position.
Ross was then almost in on goal, with the ball breaking to Murray who blasted wide.
Thurso finished strongly and got the leveller five minutes from time after Gary Manson stopped a deflected inswinging corner with his arm as he guarded the left post.
Manson was red-carded while Nichol coolly converted the spot-kick
Thurso squad – Gray, Clark, Shearer, McIntosh, Steven, MacDougall, Ross, Bremner, MacKenzie, Nichol, Murray, Wann, M. Begg, R. Begg, Sutherland.

Thurso 1 V Golspie Suth 4 - JM Cup Final - 1.5.10 « Result #7 on May 4, 2010, 11:01am »
Golspie Sutherland 4 Thurso 1 - report from Iain Grant
Thurso’s title-winning North Caley season ended in anti-climax in Invergordon on Saturday when they lost out in the final of the Jock Mackay Memorial Cup.
Golspie deserved to savour a victory which salvages what for them has been a disappointing campaign by the high standards they have set in recent seasons.
The Vikings on Saturday had the jaded look which has characterised their dispays over the past six weeks.
They also have malfunctioned in cup ties versus the divioson’s stronger outfits over the season.
Their record of four wins and four losses in the four knock-out
competitions contrasts sharply with their barnstorming unbeaten run in 18 league outings.
“I don’t know what is about cup games,” reflected Vikings manager Stevie Reid. “I can’t put my finger on why we’ve under-performed in them compared to our league performances.”
While conceding that the Sutherland side were the better team on the day, he winces at the 4-1 margin of defeat.
“There was not much in the game,” he said. “Fair play to Golspie in taking the chances that came their way but they agreed that the final score flattered them.”
Thurso lined up with an attack-minded 4-3-3 with Nigel MacKenzie joining the attacking spearhead of Mark Nichol and Stuart MacKenzie.
The ambition failed to produce results at the business end, with the service to the frontmen producing no more than a smattering of half-chances from open play.
Golspie, too, struggled to find the killer pass or cross though they took full advantage of the openings they were afforded.
The first goal on 25 minutes came out of the blue when a defensive gremlin let in defender John Smith who ran on to steer the ball wide of Thurso keeper Michael Gray.
Just under 15 minutes minutes later, Thurso were on the attack when a stray pass gifted possession to Golspie. A lightning counter ended with Tommy Campbell getting goalside of left wing-back Lee MacDougall. Campbell bore in on goal and fired a shot which beat Gray on his near post.
Thurso got one back seven minutes after the interval when Nichol’s swerving 20 yard free-kick found the gap between keeper Steven Campbell and his right-hand post.
Thurso continued their encouraging start to the second period and, without seriously threatening an equaliser, were enjoying good spells of quality possession.
Their confidence was however punctured on 59 minutes when they conceded a third.
Gray had pulled off a cracking double parry but was powerless to prevent Pole Kris Mikula from converting the second rebound.
Golspie’s victory was confirmed by a cracking first-time volley nine minutes from time which streaked past Gray.
Manager Reid said: “We didn’t deserve to be two behind at the interval as they were just about the only chances they had.
“I felt confident when we got the goal back and were looking sparky but once we lost the third one, the game was pretty well up for us. “Unfortunately, it never happened for us on the day in the final third.”
Looking back on the campaign, Reid was more than happy with how it had gone. “Of course, it’s disappointing to end the season losing a cup final.
“But the main goal was the league and the boys can be proud of going through that undefeated and winning the title. “It’s been a great effort by them.”

Fort William 0 V Thurso 12 - report by Iain Grant
The Vikings on Saturday grossly exceeded the single point they needed to prise from their final PSG North Caley fixture to clinch the championship.
They ran up the biggest score of the league season to lift their first title for seven years and condemn their hosts to a sorry end to their debut season.
Stuart MacKenzie led the goal chase with five with Nigel and Jamie of that ilk grabbing three and one respectively.
The tally was completed by a brace from arch marksman Mark Nichol and a single from Sean Munro.
Thurso made light of the potentially sapping effects of the long coach trip as they set about wrapping up the championship within the first 20 minutes.
By then, they were 4-0 up and shoo-ins to add to the club’s previous league flags claimed in 1999/2000 and 20002/3.
Thurso welcomed back Andrew Bremner to the centre of defence after recovering from the recurrence of a knee complaint.
Stuart MacKenzie also pepped up their attacking options after work commitments meant he has only been able to play a handful of gamers this season.
The latter’s early strike settled any nerves and they were soon regularly cutting open Fort’s brittle defence all too easily.
After being put in the clear, Stuart MacKenzie closed in on Jay Smith before slotting the ball between the keeper and his far post.
The visitors went on to strike at regular intervals before the interval with a left-foot half volley the pick of Nigel MacKenzie’s threesome.
His brother Jamie MacKenzie added a solo effort and Stuart MacKenzie grabbed another with a tap-in.
Nichol then broke the clan stranglehold on the scoring with the first of his brace either side of the break.
The Vikings were in rampant form with Stuart MacKenzie adding three in the second half while he had several other ‘goals’ chalked off by offside flags.
He reserved his best for his last when he ran on to a through ball from sub Marc Begg, tricked his way past the two home central defenders before finessing the ball past Smith from eight yards.
Nichol was denied a hat-trick when his free-kick came back of a post
while Lee MacDougall was left red-faced after blasting over an unguarded net.
The scoring was rounded off near the end with a diving header from sub Sean Munro.
Visiting keeper Michael Gray was a virtual spectator as his team ran riot on their first visit to Lochaber.
Stevie Reid, in his second spell in charge of Thurso, took a full part in the post-match celebrations.
He said: “I thought we showed cool heads on Saturday and went about our job in the right way.
“It was a struggle for Fort William who had some young boys who need to get a bit more experience.
“After the third goal, you could see their heads going down and they just disappeared out of the game.”
Reflecting on the league season, Reid points to the goals against column as a major reason for the side’s success.
The concession of 13 goals in 18 matches reflects a defensive solidity which they have displayed throughout the campaign.
“It’s been a strong point of the whole season,” he said. “I’ve been delighted for guys like Andrew Bremner. “He’s come on by leaps and bounds, as have a clutch of young guys we’ve taken in.” He said the combination of Jamie MacKenzie and Gary MacGregor in the centre of midfield and Nichol’s 34-goal haul had also been vital ingredients.
Thurso were unbeaten in their title campaign, with nine wins out of nine at Sir Georges Park and six victories and three draws on their travels.
